Slow and
even
Against the
cool, clay wall;
A uncoiling
array of
Shades
empurpling the surface
Of its
smooth, vibrating whiteness
Splaying a
prurient tongue.
Captives of
the coercion within music
Twisting in
time to the circuitous phrases,
Sinuously
branching in serpentine designs
As their
shadow’s climb the walls.
The cosmic
will concealed within sound,
Voluptuous
essence of the aethers heeded
By the
emotions of the soul,
Apprehended
by the endless appetite of the senses
For the
radiance of music,
Conjuring
the animal will
Deriving from the hidden sound
As the
silhouettes pulse against the wall
Moving
through shadows of smoking incense
Images of
the room:
Outside the
tall doorway
Within the
hallway,
Leading to
the veranda surrounded in jasmine
Past the
bedroom of the harem chambers,
The women in
the far room
Waiting,
relaxing, undressing,
Winding and
unwinding their tresses
Laughing
about the rajah.
A mood of
seduction:
Scales
rising, lifting, climbing, stretching...
Pure
submission to the soft, twisting sound
A flicker of
flames like serpent tongues
Carefully
lunging from captivating lamps,
An ambience
of vague indiscretion
As purple
shadows writhe and sway,
Their
enchantment suggesting hesitation yet
Too vaguely
menacing to connote protection
A hostaging
of the senses
As the room
flush with the sweat of hot nightfall
Reveals the
soft, tortuous flow of shades
Emerging
from this corps of serpents,
Their
swaying, purple ingressions on the wall
Dancing to
the ruthless allure
Of the
melody,
Moving
slowly before their baskets,
The notes of
the flute continuously decaying and renewing
And
building from out of one note
To another
sustained and bent, winding on and on
Multiple nuances of their curving, winding shapes
Of the music and
snakes as one
As the
unseen snake charmer deliberates upon the animal soul
Transfixing
the serpents in sound and moonlight,
And I too
transfixed by this vision
